Fall Tackle Football - South Charlotte Patriots (Pop Warner)

Update (Aug 8, 2020): Given Gov. Cooper's decision to keep our state under Phase II restrictions, our local tackle football league -- the Pop Warner Little Panthers -- has announced the cancellation of our season, which impacts the entire PW Charlotte area. There is an alternative available for 7v7. We are working on details with other associations so please start thinking about which direction you would like to follow: (1) participate in 7v7, (2) keep any paid funds in your account to apply to a future sports season, or (3) refund of paid funds. A broadcast message will be sent to registered families with these options. We will start planning for a potential reopening in late fall for flag football or further out into the spring.

 

Update (July 30, 2020): SCRA football registration will be held open as we get into August. We are awaiting Gov. Cooper's announcement on August 7th that will determine if we stay in Phase II or move into a less restrictive Phase III. This will ultimately drive many decisions in our league regarding next steps, so please continue to be patient with us as we work to save our season of play for our kids. 


Update (July 16, 2020): SCRA football registration is open and players are encouraged to reserve their roster spot with our "$0 Hold My Spot" fee. Given the uncertainty due to the COVID pandemic, we believe this warrants no registration fee with the balance due before the distribution of equipment for the season. For those players who have already registered, your registration would be refunded in the event of a season cancellation before the purchase of game jerseys. Thereafter, refunds would be net of the jersey cost, which your player keeps. Please do not hesitate to contact our Football Director,  , with any questions or concerns.

Program Information

Important Dates:

· Last Day of Registration — open until rosters are filled (reserve your spot today)

· Rosters Finalized — typically by end of first week (Sept 1st); coaches will contact all players.

· Parent Meeting — recorded Zoom session will be emailed to all families prior to start of season 

· Dick’s shopping day — date will be announced!

· First Practice — TBD (Due to the COVID pandemic, our start date has moved from Aug 1st to Sept 1st.)

 

Fees:

$0 Hold-My-Spot when registering with the balance of $330 to be paid in full prior to distribution of equipment.

Due to the popularity of our program, any unpaid registrations when due (prior to equipment distribution, end of Aug) will be deleted after 48 hours and you must re-register.

Player age: 

Football age is based on player age on July 31st; please refer to program divisions below.

 
Parent Meeting:

Recorded Zoom meeting will be emailed to all registered families two weeks before start of season.

Paperwork can be turned in to your coaches. No equipment will be issued unless all paperwork is turned in and full program payment is made. 
An equipment deposit check in the amount of $100 will be required when all paperwork is submitted. The check will NOT be deposited unless equipment is not turned in at the end of the season.

 

Jamboree: 2-3 weeks after start of season (date TBA)

 
Games begin:

Team Formation Notes

Players that sign up before Aug 1st and have paid the registration fee will be assigned to their respective teams. Players that sign up after Aug 1st may be waitlisted depending on the number of registrants. Players will not be officially placed on a roster until their registration fee is paid. Unpaid registrations are deleted after 48 hours.

The ability to form Junior Varsity teams is dependent on the number of registrations we receive. Players at this level should register by Aug 1st so we can determine the ability to create teams. At this time we cannot guarantee anyone placement on a Junior Varsity team until we review the total number of registrations. If a Junior Varsity team cannot be formed, refunds will be issued in accordance with our Refund Policy.

 

Special Notice to Returning Players

If you are a returning South Charlotte player and want to play on the same team as last year with the same coach/coaches, whether or not that team is moving up to the next division, you are guaranteed a spot on that team provided the following conditions are met: 

​1. You register and are paid in full by July 1st prior to distribution of equipment.

​2. You qualify under the age/weight restrictions. 
 
Any returning player registering after July 1st distribution of equipment, and wanting to play on the same team as last year with the same coach/coaches, whether or not that team is moving up to the next division, will not be guaranteed a spot on their previous year's team and will be placed on a team based on availability. This may be the same team you were on last year, but this cannot be guaranteed is registration is after July 1st. 
Additionally, returning players will be given team placement priority.
 

Program Divisions

The Pop Warner Little Panthers League offers the opportunity for participants from five years of age to 13 years of age to play football in the league.  
 
The Little Panthers League provides opportunities for participation in football in five age/weight divisions. Tiny Mite is an instructional division. Mitey Mite is a competitive division that is focused on training and learning the game.

Please note the age/weight limits and comments for each program. AGE IS AS OF JULY 31st.

IMPORTANT NOTE: 

South Charlotte Recreation Association does not allow players to "play up" from the Mitey Mite division. All players that qualify for the Mitey Mite division will be required to play in that division. We do not recommend that any player play up if they qualify for a lower division. 

 

Tiny Mite: 
Ages 5, 6 & 7 weighing between 35-75 pounds.
The intent is that 7-year olds would play Tiny Mite. Exceptions given if the player weights more than 75 pounds or the association does not field a Tiny Mite team. Tiny Mite, for the most part, is a child's first year participating in tackle football.

Mitey Mite:
Ages 7, 8 & 9 weighing between 50-100 lbs.

Mitey Mite is strictly a training division and although the score is kept, the emphasis is on learning, completely free of any pressure to win.

Jr. Pee Wee:
Ages 8, 9, & 10 weighing between 65-115 lbs
Age 11 weighing between 65-95 lbs.

Jr. Pee Wee is the first division that is closest to full-blown tackle football. Coaches must stay on the sidelines. High school rules are followed with some exceptions. 11 year olds who would qualify as an older-but-lighter player in Pee Wee should strongly consider staying in Jr. Pee Wee.

Pee Wee:
Ages 9, 10, & 11 weighing between 80-130 lbs
Age 12 weighing between 80-110 lbs.

12 year olds who would quality as and older-but-lighter player in Pee Wee should strongly consider staying in Pee Wee for the additional year.

Jr. Varsity: 

Ages 10, 11, & 12 weighing between 95-155 lbs
Age 13 weighing between 95-135 lbs.

Jr. Varsity is our toughest division to field a team due to CMS middle schools holding football tryouts so late. Players planning to try out for middle school ball should sign up for Jr. Varsity during the open registration period. If the player makes the middle school team, they are welcome to return to the Patriots team at the conclusion of the middle school season in accordance with the policy below. NO REFUNDS are given for players leaving the program for a middle school team.

Required Documentation for Registration

The Pop Warner Program places an emphasis on good sportsmanship, safety, and scholastics. The completion and submittal of additional paperwork will be required to finalize your registration. The following forms and information are required. More information will be provided about the collection of these forms.

1. Participant Contract and Parental Consent- This Pop Warner document is the basic registration form and contract signed by participants and their parents agreeing to the rules of Pop Warner. Please click here for pdf form. Additionally, by signing up with South Charlotte Recreation Association, families agree to the Association's Code of Conduct, which can be found here

2. Physical Fitness & Medical History Form- This Pop Warner form is a signed statement from an examining physician licensed in North Carolina that a candidate is physically fit and there are no observable conditions that would prohibit his or her participation in football. Please Note – The Physical Examination Form must be dated after January 1st of current year.  Please click here for the Pop Warner Form. A school physical form or doctor's form may be used in place of the Pop Warner physical form (Page 2), but it must be dated after January 1, 2019, and must be accompanied by PAGE 1 of the Pop Warner Form. 

3. Proof of Age- A copy of the birth certificate is required. Passports may be used as well as Military ID cards.

4. Scholastic Fitness- The most recent complete report card (containing all four quarters of grades and the final grade for the previous year) or a completed Pop Warner Scholastic Eligibility Form or a Home School Form are required.
